If you would like to donate stock, follow the steps below. Donating securities may be of benefit to you financially. You should consult with an advisor prior to using this option. If you have additional questions, please contact us.

Instruct your bank or broker how many shares of which companies you wish to gift and instruct them to deliver as follows:

Please deliver or mail unendorsed certificates by regular mail along with a letter signed by any and all persons whose names are on the certificate indicating that you are making a gift to United Way of McHenry County.

Under separate cover, mailed or delivered to the address above, provide a signed stock power for each different company’s shares being gifted. Your bank or broker can supply these forms. Do not complete any of the other blanks on the stock power other than the share quantity, name of the company and the signatures.

Valuation of Gift

For publicly traded securities, the value of your gift is the number of shares multiplied by the average of the high and low prices on the date you make your gift. Your gift is considered complete on the date the securities pass from your control. Assuming all delivery instructions are completed by mail, this would be the date of mailing. In the case of certificate or electronic transfer, this would be the date the transfer occurs on the books of the corporation or your bank or broker acts on your instructions.

Receipt for Income Tax Purposes

When United Way of McHenry County receives your stock gift, we will promptly prepare and send you a signed receipt conforming to IRS expectations.
